Trafalgar Studios 2 will get a visit from the famous Christopher Hampton play “When Did You Last See My Mother?” this September as we meet an array of characters and a mother figure who stirs things up in an unexpected way. The play first emerged on the scene four decades ago and it is now set to be introduced to a new audience from the London theatre scene, where its famous wit and accurately realised characters will likely win over plenty of new fans
Christopher Hampton is a well known writer whose work has been utilised in various different disciplines over the years, with “When Did You Last See My Mother?” marking his debut in 1964, followed by “Total Eclipse”, “The Philanthropist” and “Savages”, in addition to the musical version of “Rebecca”, which was due to appear at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2011. He has also been behind the screenplays for movies such as “A Doll’s House”, “Dangerous Liaisons”, “Atonement” and “A Dangerous Method”, among others. So he is a well known writer whose work has earned him great acclaim in all quarters, making “When Did You Last See My Mother?” – his first work – a particularly significant production.
The play takes us back to the 1960s where we meet Ian, a lonely and single man whose frustrations are exacerbated by his flatmate Jimmy, whose good lucks mean he can chase all of the love interests that he desires. Such frustrations have left Ian with seemingly no option other than to leave London in search of something else, but then Jimmy’s mother arrives on the scene and everything changes. Secrets emerge and new territory is explored, making for a compelling twist that will leave a lasting impression on those with Theatre Tickets.
Christopher Hampton’s play will be brought to life under the direction of Blanche McIntyre when it arrives in the West End this year, who has previously worked for The National Theatre studio and the Out of Joint Company (founded by Max Stafford-Clark, who brings Top Girls” to the same venue in August).
“When Did You Last See My Mother” appears at Trafalgar Studios 2 from Wednesday 14th September 2011 to Saturday 8th October 2011.
