Having already entertained audiences at venues across the country, Hugh Whitemore’s Sand In The Sandwiches makes a brief appearance in London’s West End. The show allows theatregoers to spend an evening with the late Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, Sir John Betjeman as Edward Fox stars in a one-man play celebrating his life and work.
Fox will bring Betjeman’s signature wit and style to the Theatre Royal Haymarket during a small gap in performances of The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? adding another unmissable show to the venue’s line-up, which already includes Queen Anne and Love’s Labour’s Lost, amongst others, in 2017.
For those who are familiar with poet’s work, this will be an unmissable evening in London’s West End, with Fox’s Betjeman taking us on a journey through his life and opinions on the world, whilst also honouring the poems that made his name.
It is a fitting legacy to a man who was honoured on numerous occasions throughout his life, with his poetry and personality winning him many admirers and granting him the title of Knight Bachelor and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. When he died in 1984 he left a big gap in British literature, though his work will live on for generations.
So producers have ensured his legacy is honoured on the stage, with veteran actor Edward Fox portraying Betjeman and director Gareth Armstrong calling the shots. It will make for a unique and memorable night in Theatreland this summer.
Sand In The Sandwiches runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Tuesday 30th May 2017.
