The Wyndham’s Theatre once again finds itself welcoming a big name to its stage in 2017. Just as 2016 saw it present No Man’s Land with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, with many other famous faces treading the boards in the years prior, 2017 will see it turn its attention to former Doctor Who star David Tennant. He returns to the West End to appear in Patrick Marber’s Don Juan In Soho, the contemporary retelling of the Moliere classic.
Tennant has appeared here before, of course, as he starred alongside his Doctor Who companion Catherine Tate in Much Ado About Nothing in 2011. It was one of many Shakespearean works he has tackled during his career, but for 2017 he embodies the iconic libertine as he stakes his claim in London’s Soho. But despite the change in location and time period he still embodies the same traits that made the character famous for centuries, with betrayal and nastiness in spades as he embarks upon his obsession with the more pleasurable side of life.
Whilst Moliere’s version of Don Juan first emerged back in the 17th century (with an older legend appearing first), Patrick Marber’s version was first presented to London audiences at the Donmar Warehouse in 2006, welcoming big names and earning critical praise.
So whilst audiences will undoubtedly be attracted to the presence of David Tennant in the title role, there is a lot to enjoy about Don Juan In Soho, with Marber himself also coming along to direct. An actor and director, audiences might know him for his work on television shows like The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You With Alan Partridge. However, he has also directed shows like Closer (later adapted into a film) and penned the likes of After Miss Julie.
So Don Juan In Soho is a must-see as David Tennant swaps the blue phonebox of Doctor Who for the wild streets of Soho. He follows up work in the likes of Broadchurch and Richard II at the Barbican Theatre as well, bringing plenty of experience to the stage of the Wyndham’s Theatre.
Don Juan In Soho plays at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Tuesday 28th March 2017 (previews from Friday 17th March 2017).
